Air Force Ones
The Nike Air Force 1 is a masterpiece of the past and a sole icon for the future. Created by legendary Nike designer Bruce Kilgore, Air Force One shoes were originally released in 1982 as premier basketball shoes. The early models of the AF1 shoe were inspired by hiking shoes, designed without the famous perforated toe box but with the addition of mesh side panels. The term “Air Force 1” refers to the airplane the President of the United States travels in. Just like the President’s airplane, the Air Force 1 shoes are elite, well known and always evolving with the times. Many different types of Air Force Ones have been produced since their original release in 1982. They were first issued in low-top and high-top versions, with mid-top styles added later on. The Air Force 1 mid and high models feature an innovative strap that aims to prevent ankle injuries and secure the foot while playing basketball. The mid’s strap is attached to the upper of the shoe while the high’s strap is removable, offering yet another customizable option for your kicks.

On the technical side of Air Force One shoes, they were the first Nike basketball shoes to feature a full-length Air-Sole® unit. Cushioning was a must-have in a basketball shoe, as players needed the extra padding under their feet as they logged long hours on the court and put many demands on the performance of their shoes. The Air Force 1 was originally created for NBA players in the 1980s, offering the new Air-Sole® cushioning as the premier technology that all basketball players would need to enhance their games, while also becoming a high-profile status symbol for some of the top basketball players of that time.

In 1984, Nike Air Force 1 finally exploded onto the scene, becoming a major hit with the inner-city youth, hip-hop artists and street ball players. As a performance shoe, the Air Force One is still used for street play as well as for professional play. Although their original purpose was basketball, many sneakerheads and collectors wear Nike Air Force Ones today strictly for show. Collectors also keep them in mint condition as an addition to their massive sneaker collection, as Air Force 1 are prize shoes to own in as many colors as possible. It’s unlikely that any sneakerhead owns every color ever made of the low-top, as Nike has made over one thousand different colorways, numerous limited-edition models -- from Puerto Rico to Los Angeles -- and has collaborated with many companies, artists and athletes to produce limited Air Force Ones that are highly sought after. But even with all of the unique colors out there, the “black on black” and “white on white” models are still the most popular. They are a central piece in any wardrobe and are a favorite among sneaker collectors for their sleek look and versatile style. Nike Air Force One shoes have truly transcended time and evolved into historic shoes that have been there, done that, and will be around to see it all in the future.
